One Sunday afternoon, when Amieâs twins were at the movies with their cousins, she found Johnny still lying in bed, listening to the radio, his cigarette poised on an ashtray, only half-smoked. She sat beside him, snuggling close, and as she began kissing him, she felt not only her own arousal but his. And yet, he gently but maddeningly pushed her away.
âWhoa, girl,â he chided. âKids will be home soon. Donât make trouble, now.â
âItâs a double feature, and Frankieâs taking them out for pizza afterwards,â Amie murmured. âIâm not making trouble. But maybe weâll make a sweet little baby. Donât you want me to have a little girl to dress up in pretty clothes, like Lucy and Petrina do?â
âSorry, babe. Iâm too tired.â
Amie decided it was time to have a little talk with her husband.
âJohnny, itâs been a long while since weâve made love,â she said bluntly.
âAh, câmon, not that long,â he said, staring out the window. âArenât you sick of me, anyway?â he teased.
Amie was all the more irritated by this useless denial of his. âIt has so been a long time,â she persevered, âbut maybe itâs you whoâs sick of me!â
She hadnât intended to let her voice end in a pathetic wail, but it did. Johnny turned to her in astonishment, then raised himself on an elbow and said soothingly, âAw, honey, of course Iâm not sick of you! Iâm just plain old sick, thatâs all.â
âAnd donât hide behind that flu of yours,â she retorted, refusing to be mollified. âEither go to the doctor or shut up about it!â
He was silent a moment, then said more roughly, âItâs not flu, okay?â
âThen what is it?â Amie demanded.
Johnny sat up completely now and threw back his covers. âJust forget about it,â he said brusquely. Amie sat up, too, and reached a hand up to his forehead.
âYou donât have a fever,â she said accusingly.
âNo, I donât. Iâm just coughing up blood again, thatâs all!â he exclaimed. âAre you happy now?â
Amie looked at him in astonishment. âCoughing blood? What do you mean, again?â He had been coughing all winter, it was true, but she hadnât seen blood and she assumed it was the flu that was going around. âJohnny, answer me!â she demanded.
âForget it,â he said shortly, reaching for the smoldering cigarette.
âStop that!â she exclaimed, snatching it away. âYou answer me, right now. Iâm your wife. I have a right to know.â
He stared at her a long time, then said in a rush, âItâs the TB again. I had it as a kid. I beat it, a long time ago. Now itâs back, I guess.â
Amie took a good, hard look at her husband, which, she realized, she hadnât done in a while. Johnny had always been lanky, but now he looked a bit gaunt and pale, with dark shadows under his eyes. Sheâd put it down to grief over his parents, to stress, to winterâs chill. Now she was seeing, at last. âOh, Johnny,â she said softly, going to him. âWhy
